What shopfront glass replacement is and how it works

Shopfront glass replacement means taking out a broken or cracked commercial pane and fitting a new one. It covers display windows, glazed shop doors, side panels and the glass above them.

Shopfront panes are large and are normally safety glass, so they are made to size and not cut on site. We measure on the first visit and fit on a return visit. If the glass has already gone, shopfront boarding keeps the premises locked up until then.

The right glass matters as much as the right size. Toughened glass breaks into small blunt pieces, while laminated glass holds together when broken. Our safety glass page sets out the difference.

The call-out is the same one we run for homes, described under emergency glazing. Smaller panes at the back of the premises can be dealt with as a broken window repair on the same job.

What happens on the measuring visit

  • Cracked or broken glass is made safe
  • The frame and fixings are checked
  • Glass type and thickness are noted
  • The opening is measured for the order

What shopfront glass replacement costs

Large panes are made one at a time, so a fixed price list would not mean much. Your price turns on these four points.

  • Size of the pane

Bigger sheets cost more to make and need more people to carry and fit.
  • Type of glass

Toughened, laminated and double glazed panes each come at a different cost.
  • Number of panes

One display window, or the window, the door and the side panels together.
  • Access to the frontage

Tell us about steps, shutters, street furniture or anything else in front of the glass.

Choosing between toughened and laminated shopfront glass

Both are safety glass, but they behave differently when hit. Toughened glass shatters into small blunt pieces, which leaves the opening empty. Laminated glass cracks but stays in one sheet, so the shopfront is still closed after an impact.

That difference matters if the window has been broken before, or if stock sits close to the glass. Like for like is the simplest route. If you want to change the type, say so before the order goes in, because toughened glass cannot be cut or altered once it has been made.

Not sure what you had? Send us a photo of the broken glass and the frame and we will tell you.

Shopfront glass replacement questions

Can shopfront glass be replaced on the day it breaks?

Not usually. Shopfront panes are made to size and cannot be cut on site, so the opening is measured and secured first. The glass is fitted on a return visit.

What type of glass goes into a shopfront?

Shop windows and doors are normally glazed with toughened or laminated safety glass. We check what was there before and tell you if a different type would suit the opening better.

Do you replace glass in shop doors?

Yes. Glazed entrance doors, their side panels and the glass above them are all part of this service.

My shop window is cracked but still in place. Is that urgent?

A cracked pane can get worse and should be looked at soon. Send a photo and we will tell you whether it needs making safe now or can wait for the new glass.

Will the shop need to close while the glass is fitted?

The area around the pane has to be kept clear while the glass is lifted in. Tell us your trading hours and we will try to arrange the fitting around them.

How much does shopfront glass replacement cost?

It depends on the size of the pane, the type of glass, how many panes are broken and how easy the frontage is to reach. We quote before any glass is ordered.
