Door boarding for forced and damaged doors

A door that will not shut or lock leaves the whole building open. We board the doorway or the broken panel so the property is closed until the door is put right.

What door boarding is and when you need it

Door boarding covers a doorway when the door, its glass or its frame is too damaged to lock. A timber board is cut to size and fixed over the door or the broken panel.

Doors get damaged in break-ins, by forced entry, in accidents and in storms. Sometimes only the glass panel has gone. Sometimes the lock has been torn out of the frame and the door swings loose. Either way, the doorway is closed off before we leave.

Boarding is the stopgap, not the repair. If the door was forced, our burglary repairs service deals with the door, frame and lock. If the glass is all that broke, see door glass replacement, where the new panel is measured and made to size.

Windows broken in the same incident can be covered on the same visit through window boarding. For a shop entrance or glazed commercial door, read about shopfront boarding.

What happens at the door

  • The door, frame and lock are looked over
  • Broken glass and splinters are cleared
  • A board is cut to the door or panel
  • The doorway is left closed and secure

What door boarding costs

There is no fixed price list for doors, because the damage varies so much. The quote comes down to four points.

  • Type of door

A single back door takes less board than a pair of patio doors.
  • Whether it still locks

Boarding one broken panel is a smaller job than closing off a whole doorway.
  • Extra openings

Side panels, glass above the door and nearby windows add to the work.
  • When it needs doing

Tell us if the door has to be covered tonight or can wait for daylight.

How door boarding works

  1. Show us the door

Send a picture of the door and frame, along with the postcode.
  2. Hear the price

We quote the job and give you a time. Nothing is booked until you agree.
  3. The doorway is boarded

Glass and splinters are cleared, then the board is cut and fixed in place.
  4. Repairs are planned

We measure for glass or look at the frame and lock, so the next visit can be arranged.

  • Records for your insurer

Photos of the damaged door and the finished boarding come with an itemised invoice.

Getting in and out once a door is boarded

A fully boarded doorway cannot be used. Before we start, we will ask which other door you plan to use. If only one panel is broken and the door still shuts and locks, the panel alone can be boarded and the door carries on working.

If the damaged door is the only way in and out, say so when you call. Send us a photo and we will tell you what can be done to keep the property secure and still usable.

After a forced entry, report it to the police and your insurer, and keep hold of the photos and invoice from our visit.

Door boarding questions

Can I still use the door after it is boarded?

If only a glass or lower panel is boarded and the door still locks, yes. If the whole doorway is boarded, it stays shut until the door is repaired, so you will need another way in.

My door will not lock after a break-in. Can you help?

Yes. We board the doorway so the property is closed, and we can look at the door, frame and lock as part of our burglary repairs.

Do you board patio and French doors?

Yes. Large glazed doors are boarded pane by pane or across the full opening, with timber battens behind the boards where the span is wide.

Will the board mark my door frame?

Fixings leave small holes. We keep them few and put them where they do the least harm. Ask us before we begin if you are worried about a particular door.

Can you board a door at a shop or office?

Yes. We work on business premises as well as homes, including glazed entrance doors and back doors.

How much does door boarding cost?

It depends on the kind of door, how much of it needs covering and when you need us. Send a photo and a postcode for a quote before work starts.
