What door glass replacement is and when you need it
Door glass replacement is new glass fitted into a door you already have. We take out the cracked or smashed panel and fit a new one in its place. The door, its lock and its frame all stay.
It covers front doors, back doors, French doors and sliding patio doors. The glass might be a small panel next to the lock, a glazed top half or a pane the full height of the door. Patterned obscure glass can be replaced too, and we match the pattern as closely as we can.
Glass in doors is expected to be safety glass, and toughened panels and sealed units have to be made to size. So the first visit is for measuring and for closing the gap, usually with door boarding. The new panel goes in on a return visit. Our safety glass page explains how toughened and laminated glass differ.
If the glass was broken during a break-in, the lock and frame may need attention as well, which comes under burglary repairs. Glazed shop doors are dealt with on our shopfront glass replacement page.

What door glass replacement costs
Door glass is priced job by job, not from a list. These four things decide the figure.
-
Size of the panel
A narrow strip beside the lock costs less to make than a full patio door pane. -
Kind of glass
Toughened or laminated, single or double glazed. The glass has to suit the door. -
Type of door
Hinged timber, uPVC or composite doors and sliding patio doors each hold their glass differently. -
Plain or patterned
Clear glass is straightforward. A patterned panel has to be matched to what was there.

How door glass replacement works

Photograph the door
Send one picture of the whole door and one close up of the glass, along with the postcode. -
Agree the price
We quote for securing the door and for the new glass. Nothing is booked until you say yes. -

We remove the broken panel, board the gap so the door locks, and take the measurements. -
New panel fitted
When the glass has been made we return, take the board off and fit the panel into the door.
Why use us for door glass

You keep your door
Changing the glass is usually far less upheaval than having a whole new door fitted. -
Locked up on the first visit
The door is boarded on the first visit, so it can be shut and locked while the glass is made. -
Call at any hour
A person picks up the phone 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays. -
Photos for your claim
We photograph the broken door and the finished repair, and list the work on an itemised invoice.
Before and after: what our door glass replacement looks like

Matching patterned and obscure glass
Obscure glass lets light in while blurring the view, which is why it is so common in front doors and bathroom doors. It comes in many patterns, and each one blurs the view to a different degree.
To match yours, we need a clear close up photo of the pattern, taken from an unbroken part of the panel or from a matching panel nearby. Most current patterns can be ordered as safety glass. Some older designs are no longer made, and if yours is one of them we will show you the closest alternatives before anything is ordered.
Where a door has two matching panels and only one is broken, you can replace just that one or change both so they are identical. We will quote for either so you can choose.

Door glass replacement questions
Can you replace the glass without replacing the whole door?
In most doors, yes. The glass is a separate panel that can be taken out and renewed. If the door itself is too damaged to hold new glass, send us a photo and we will tell you what the options are.
Does glass in a door have to be safety glass?
Safety glass is expected in doors, because a door is where people are most likely to fall against or push on the glass. We fit toughened or laminated glass to suit the door.
Can you match the patterned glass in my front door?
Usually. Send a close up of the pattern and we will look for the same design. If it is no longer made, we will show you the nearest alternatives first.
Is my door secure while the new glass is being made?
Yes. On the first visit the gap is covered with a timber board cut to size, fixed so the door can still be closed and locked.
Do you replace the glass in sliding patio doors?
Yes. Patio door panes are large sealed units, so they are measured on the first visit and made to order. If the pane is broken through, we board it in the meantime.
How much does it cost to replace door glass?
The price depends on the size of the panel, the kind of glass, the type of door and whether a pattern has to be matched. A photo and a postcode are normally enough for a quote.
